In recent days, the Executive Decree N°333 of December 5, 2019 was enacted to regulate the Law N°15 of May 31, 2016, which provide equal opportunities to people with disabilities in the Republic of Panama. This regulation aims for the accessibility in public and private areas for people with disabilities, focusing on education, housing, health, transport, rehabilitation, sports, culture, voting rights, amongst others.
This Decree comprises an additional protection to people with disabilities, in both the public and private sector, granting these employees double the annual time for sick leave. This benefit extends to the persons registered by the employee as his responsible relative, representative or tutor with the purpose of accompanying him at the appointments, therapies or educational activities related to the special condition.
Finally, the regulation includes other significant topics, such as, the awarding of social housing with accessible infrastructure for people with disabilities and the enforcement and imposition of penalties due to non-compliance in adapting spaces to the universal design of facilities in public services and spaces for public use.
